Ingredients

450 g Dried Beans (Haricot, Borlotti or Butter Beans)
3-4 medium sized – peeled and quartered Onions
3-5 Tbsp. Mustard Powder
3 Tbsp Tomato Paste
As Required Pepper
As Required Salt
225 grams Brown Sugar
600 ml. Boiling Water

      If you don’t like baked beans, there is something wrong with you.

      They are quite delicious, they are easy to make and are incredibly cost-effective. 

      Also, it’s an amazing source of protein, dietary fibre and antioxidants, therefore, it is really helpful for better health, to reduce risk of cancer, and to control your appetite.

      Start by boiling the beans in plain water until they become tender. We are going to do that without salt as that will be added later. Once done, let’s drain them.

      Next, let’s preheat the oven to 120°C or 250°F.

      Add 3-5 tbsp. of mustard powder and tomato paste in an empty bean saucepan. Add a little bit of boiling water and mix it until you have a thin paste.

      Add sugar and rest of the water until the sugar is dissolved.

      Put the onions, bacon and the drained beans into a large casserole. Sprinkle black peppers over them and then pour in the liquid. Next, cover the casserole and bake it for 3-4 hours.

      Make sure you take it out of the oven every hour and stir it. Keep adding later to the mix as required.

      After 4 hours, let’s take it out and remove the lid and add some salt. Let’s continue cooking for another hour, stirring until you end up with a layer of browned beans on top.

      And voila, you have your baked beans ready to for you to eat. Serve it when on a baked potato with cheddar cheese or on toast with some parmesan cheese.
